The final score against Portsmouth was disappointing but the first half performance by Ipswich was terrific entertainment, if frustrating. At half time Ipswich should have been 4 – 0 in front.
Paul Jewell has turned performances around and spent little of the Marcus Evans millions. The loan signing of Jimmy Bullard has given the midfield the flair that had been missing. Bringing Lee Martin back from his loan spell at Charlton has been an excellent move, he looks a different player this season. The purchase of Andy Drury for £150,000 looks very good business. He could take over the Jimmy Bullard role next season, because lets face it, we will not be able to afford to purchase Bullard.
Paul Jewell has played what he considers his best eleven and only made changes when injuries have intervened. Having a settled side must help, although frustrating for those who have to sit on the bench, especially Jamie Peters and Tommy Smith.
Connor Wickham was guilty of missing three scoring chances on Saturday, but lets not forget he will not be 18 until the 31st March. If we can hold onto him for another season he could be the one to score 20 odd goals. He wears the number 9 shirt normally associated with the centre forward and thats where he should be playing in a 4-4-2 formation.
The future is beginning to look brighter. Once the club has reached 50 odd points the fear of relegation will be gone and Paul Jewell will be able to plan for next season. If Marcus Evans wants to fill the stadium then ticket prices have got to come down. Times are hard for a lot of people. I admire those supporters who go to all the away games, they must have very deep pockets or make other sacrifices.
