The final score against Portsmouth was disappointing but the first half performance by Ipswich was terrific entertainment, if frustrating. At half time Ipswich should have been 4 – 0 in front. Paul Jewell has turned performances around and spent little of the Marcus Evans millions. The loan signing of Jimmy Bullard has given the midfield the flair that had been missing. Bringing Lee Martin back from his loan spell at Charlton has been an excellent move, he looks a different player this season. The purchase of Andy Drury for £150,000 looks very good business. He could take over the Jimmy Bullard role next season, because lets face it, we will not be able to afford to purchase Bullard.

Paul Jewell has played what he considers his best eleven and only made changes when injuries have intervened. Having a settled side must help, although frustrating for those who have to sit on the bench, especially Jamie Peters and Tommy Smith.

Connor Wickham was guilty of missing three scoring chances on Saturday, but lets not forget he will not be 18 until the 31st March. If we can hold onto him for another season he could be the one to score 20 odd goals. He wears the number 9 shirt normally associated with the centre forward and thats where he should be playing in a 4-4-2 formation.

The future is beginning to look brighter. Once the club has reached 50 odd points the fear of relegation will be gone and Paul Jewell will be able to plan for next season. If Marcus Evans wants to fill the stadium then ticket prices have got to come down. Times are hard for a lot of people. I admire those supporters who go to all the away games, they must have very deep pockets or make other sacrifices.

Why don’t we see that every game ? We all know the team can be awful in the next game so lets not get too excited until we see what they do against Watford on Boxing Day and the games after that. Consistency is something we lack, but then the team personnel is constantly changing. I would imagine the players do not know if they are coming or going. Roy Keane has tried more players than any other Championship side so far this season.

It is now big business and financed by the Marcus Evans Group. Quite rightly it has to be run like a business and consequently some staff were made redundant especially in the Academy. Gone are the days when nearly 3000 of us invested our hard earned cash to support the share issue in 2004 which made us feel as though we were part of the club we love. The shares of course have no value now. What I find hard to get my head round is why I still get phone calls from a Huddersfield based number working for the Academy looking for my support. I am a great believer in youth development and have been pleased to give my support in the past but surely if the Marcus Evans Group own the club then they should be supporting the Academy. After all, if a youngster makes the grade he will be sold on in order to balance the books. If Connor Wickham is sold, surely Connor has some say in the matter whether he goes or not, then who pockets the proceeds, the Marcus Evans Group of course. Thats business and they should not be asking for our support.

The photo was taken at the end of the 1991/92 season and Ipswich Town had finished Champions of Division Two and gained promotion to the Premiership. John Wark was playing as a centre half in that season and nearing the end of his terrific career. The season also saw two games against Liverpool in the FA Cup. The first game at home was drawn and the replay at Ainfield was an unforgettable night, especially when the game went into extra time. Liverpool proved too strong in the end but it was a great nights entertainment and well worth the journey.

Chris Kiwomya was top goal scorer that season with 16 League goals followed by Jason Dozzell on 11. The other regular members of the team were Craig Forrest, Paul Goddard, Gavin Johnson, David Linighan, Simon Milton, Steve Palmer, Mick Stockwell, Neil Thompson, Steve Whitton and Romeo Zondervan.

The invisible Marcus Evans must be wondering why he purchased Ipswich Town Football Club. The outlay to the Marcus Evans Group was probably just a drop in the ocean considering his overall wealth. The trading accounts do not make good reading with further losses for the latest trading year ending 30th June 2010. It is a good job he has very deep pockets. He also purchased four race horses who have not given him much of a return either and are just as costly as footballers to have around.

How the football team performs will have a certain bearing on attendances as will the fact we are still in a recession. Admission prices generally are too high and that includes ITFC. I am, and have been for a long time, a season ticket holder with two seats. I do not agree with the statements that match day prices are kept at a high level to compensate for the deal that season ticket holders have. Each year, if we renew by the early bird deadline, we are told we will get a 50% rebate if Ipswich Town are promoted in that season. Sounds very nice but I do not believe that will happen again this season. The club missed an ideal opportunity to test the water and offer a deal on seat prices for the Carling Cup game against WBA. £10 for adults and £3 for children would have looked attractive for everyone especially families. It would have been a good PR exercise. Better to get some money in than have no bums on seats! There has been little atmosphere at ITFC this season. Fewer travelling fans from other clubs is due in part that the admission prices for the away fans are also too high. I was talking to a policeman at the Cardiff game whose job was to travel from Cardiff and monitor their fans at the away matches. He stated that ITFC prices were much higher than some other clubs, hence only 700 Cardiff fans travelled to Ipswich. Our friends or enemies up the road at Norwich City managed to sell 20,550 season tickets and I notice they are sold out for this Sundays game against us. Perhaps it is a more affluent area than Ipswich who have to rely on supporters travelling a fair distance to get to matches.

This Sundays game at Norwich is the most important of the season for Ipswich fans and was missed last season when Norwich were in the lower division. With a full house the atmosphere should be great and lets hope Roy Keane puts out a more adventurous side. The opening games of the season were encouraging but in my opinion too much is made of key players being injured. The midfield seems clogged up with players since the arrival of Jake Livermore and Jack Colback who are on loan until January. As much as I like Jack Colback his arrival has meant others have had to take a back seat which is a shame. It has disrupted the midfield with too many similar players. Oh for a creative midfield player. The front player or players are not getting any service from midfield so the goals are drying up and the games have become very boring.

If you want to get bums on seats something has to alter. The accounts show that gate receipts and other income that make up the turnover figure do not even cover the wage costs. Marcus Evans gave Roy Keane a two year contract which ends in June 2011. This should be honored but I am sure Marcus Evans will not make the same mistake as the FA when they gave Fabio Capello a new contract before the World Cup. What a crazy decision. I would imagine Roy Keane will have to wait until May 2011 to see if he is offered a new contract. With all his own personal wealth I do not expect it bothers him one way or the other, which is worrying for supporters who love the club for what it has achieved in the past. The play-off against Bolton and the subsequent fantastic day out at Wembley against Barnsley in May 2000 are a distant memory.

After the excellent start to the new season Tuesday nights game against QPR was a big disappointment. QPR were better than us in all areas of the field. The game was very similar to the one against Newcastle last season. Men versus Boys. For a home game it was strange to only play one up front (Jason Scotland) and then proceed to play high balls up to him which he had little chance of winning.

If he did win a header there was never another Ipswich player near enough to collect or challenge for the ball. The Ipswich midfield was non existent. David Norris was never in the game and the wide men Carlos Edwards and Andros Townsend did not get forward to support Jason Scotland or track back to help the full backs. It was as though we were in awe of QPR , standing back and giving them far too much room.

I had to keep counting that they didn’t have more players on the pitch! Their movement from midfield was excellent. Changes had to be made at half time when we were already 2-0 down and it was good to see Connor Wickham come on and try and inspire his team mates.

Tamas Priskin also came on and was asked to play on the left side of midfield. He does not look comfortable there. In my opinion Connor Wickham is the main man with either Priskin or Scotland alongside him. Priskin looked sharp and eager against Bristol City, but not on Tuesday. Perhaps he had the ache because he did start against QPR. Luke Hyam was probably unlucky in being one of the players to make way at half time, he does look to be a useful player in the making.

I wonder what changes Roy Keane will make for the next game against Cardiff City. Some of the players will have to pull their fingers out and show the bite we saw in the opening two home games. I am sure Connor Wickham will start and I would not be surprised if Jamie Peters was moved forward to the right of midfield and Troy Brown introduced at right back. Who would be a Manager? Lets hope it is an entertaining game, Ipswich keep it on the ground and get back to winning ways.

A good start to the new season. I have only seen the home game against Burnley which we should have won. There were encouraging signs in that game that there was a better team spirit and a greater determination to win. As we all know the squad has been far too big and expensive for the past two seasons, so it was obvious that there were going to be departures. Roy Keane is gradually moulding a team that he wants and not one that he inherited. From the outside it looks as though he has concentrated on moving out the larger wage earners that Jim Magilton bought to the club, coupled with the mistakes he made himself in his first season at Ipswich. David Wright, Richard Wright and Pim Balkestein were not offered new contracts. Liam Trotter got himself a better deal at Millwall. Those on loan with Ipswich last season namely Liam Rosenior, David Healey, Daryl Murphy and Jack Colback all returned to their own clubs. Then Roy Keane named eight players he was prepared to listen to offers for. Of those Kevin Lisbie, Lee Martin and Pablo Counago have all gone out on loan. Alex Bruce, Owen Garvan and Jon Stead have been sold. The other two Colin Healy and Alan Quinn still remain at the club. Jon Walters has also now been sold for £3 million plus, which is a superb piece of business. Making players available for transfer must be unsettling for them especially if they have family commitments so I can understand Jon Stead becoming unsettled. He was our best player against Burnley and put in a really good shift. There have been additions to the squad. Goalie Marton Fulop and experienced full back Mark Kennedy should be good signings. Youngster Conor Hourihane has arrived from Sunderland and another youngster, Andros Townsend, is on a season long loan from Tottenham. Defender Darren O’Dea has also arrived on loan until January from Celtic and this week Jason Scotland was purchased from Wigan and takes over the number 10 shirt worn by Jon Walters. However the money recouped from sales does not balance out the huge outlay on players that Marcus Evans initially supported. That gamble will not come off unless we gain promotion to the Premiership. If that happens then I am sure the big mistakes that Ipswich made in their second season in the Premier League will not be repeated. Bad purchases on big money and long contracts. The team spirit disappeared and Ipswich was doomed to the division where we now are.

We have progressed to the third round of the Carling Cup with two hard fought away wins. A home tie in the next round would be good to bring in some extra revenue. The draw will be made on Saturday before we host Bristol City complete with Jon Stead.

Roy Keane certainly would not win any popularity stakes and his man management skills are questionable but at the end of the day all we all want is to see our beloved Ipswich back where they belong. If Roy Keane can do it “his way” then we will forgive any of his shortcomings.

Roll on Saturday and Bristol City.

Well the last home game of the season ended with a 0-3 defeat by Sheffied United. Ipswich played some good football in the first half, most of it started in midfield by Owen Garvin. For a home game Roy Keane opted to play five in midfield, leaving young Connor Wickham to battle on his own up front. Sheffield United went in at half time one goal up and early in the second half when Tom Eastman, who was making his debut, was sent off, the game was over.

Roy Keane reckons his job starts now, but I thought he was supposed to have started a year ago ! What has he been doing then, having a laugh at the supporters expense. The season has been rubbish with very few good points. The emergence of Connor Wickham spurred me into renewing my season tickets. I do hope no stupid deals are made as banded about in the press of Tottenham buying him and then loaning him back to Ipswich for a season. If he can score twenty odd goals for us next season it might propel us into the Premiership and then he will become a Premiership player with Ipswich. Roy Keane talks of wanting four or five other players. What is going to happen to the huge squad he already has ? I know he has already released a few but a lot more need to be cleared out. David Wright not having his contract renewed was a major surprise, but perhaps he has too much to say to the press ! He could finish up with the Canaries.

Roy Keane’s expensive signings have been dreadful. I am sure Sir Alex Ferguson conned him when he told him what a good purchase Lee Martin would be, much the same as George Burley and David Sheepshanks were conned by Sven Eriksson into believing that the Italian goalie (name escapes me) we had was a good buy. Tamas Priskin just never looked interested. So what is also to become of the following :- Alex Bruce, Pablo Counago, Jon Stead, Colin Healy, Alan Quinn, Kevin Lisbie and possibly Owen Garvin. Owen Garvin is the only creative midfield player we have at the club but he has been in and out of the side like a yo-yo. He is not Roy Keane’s type of midfield player which is a shame, or is there another problem which we do not know about. If Liam Trotter has any sense he will move on and not accept a new deal. He will then be assured of playing regularly. Carlos Edwards has been disappointing and was another bad buy.

So what are we left with of those we have seen on the pitch this season ? Goalkeepers :-Brian Murphy and Arran Lee-Barrett . Defenders :- Damien Delaney, Gareth McCauley, Shane O’Connor, Tommy Smith, Tom Eastman and Troy Brown. Midfielders :- Grant Leadbetter, David Norris, Jaime Peters and Billy Clark. Hopefully Luciano Civelli will be back from injury at some point next season. Strikers :- Jonathan Walters and Connor Wickham.

My old school reports use to say “must do better”. The same applies to Roy Keane. One wonders with all his wealth, is he motivated enough ?

Well done Norwich in securing promotion back to the Championship. At least next season we should have one home game with a virtually full house and a bit of atmosphere! The last home game against Doncaster was an absolute bore, a typical end of season mid table nothing to play for game. The only bright points to come out of the game was the continued promise shown by youngsters Connor Wickham and Shane O’Connor, plus Gareth McCauley has finanally got his act together and he put in another sound shift in defence. Loanee Jack Colback has been our best player this season, as confirmed by his fellow professionals, and he will undoubtedly be back with Sunderland next season. I do not know why Roy Keane played him on Saturday, I would have thought it better to give someone else a chance as it was a nothing game. Daryl Murphy does not look that interested any more. He did not play close enough to Connor Wickham who had to lead the front line virtually on his own. I certainly hope we do not buy Murphy and Healy from Sunderland with Connor Wickham going in the opposite direction. Roy Keane has been big enough to admit he has made mistakes this season and lets hope he has learnt from them. He will certainly need to do some wheeling and dealing in readiness for next season but that is one deal I hope he does not make. Letting Jordan Rhodes go at the beginning of this season was his first big mistake. Jon Walters (pictured) by his own admission has not had a good season. When Jim Magilton bought him from Chester he was a striker, but in order for him to fit in the team Jim Magilton decided to play him on the right of midfield. His strike force at that time of Alan Lee and Pablo Counago were performing well and did not warrant change. That certainly worked for the first season. He is not a skillful player but does have a “presence” and it might be best to play him alongside Connor Wickham. That would allow somebody like Jamie Peters to play right side of midfield. There is not enough width in the side and we need someone with real pace to bomb down the wing and get behind defenders. Our midfield on Saturday lacked composure as usual. No imagination. They are very good at getting from box to box but there it ends. If I were Marcus Evans I would not pump any more money into the squad. Roy Keane has enough players to sell and wheel and deal with before the start of next season. If he is not able to do this then it will be time to bring in a more experienced manager. Jim Magilton had no managerial experience before being appointed and it was right to change him when he had lost his way. If Ipswich start next season with a similar run to this season then Roy Keane will be under immense pressure. Another inexperienced manager under pressure is Gianfranco Zola at West Ham. They could easily come through the trap door and join Ipswich in the Championship. That would make another interesting home fixture, better than having to watch Scunthorpe again!
